I always tried to brand myself as a never-car guy; and that is true. Sorry, was true; always messed up the tense since Chinese is a language without Tense. And that was true for a lot of reasons. First, I did not have money to buy (and maintain) a car. Second, I hate hassle to take care of it. And finally, it is just so dangerous. “Yeah you a wuss”. How many people want to risk their lives everyday when they go out to buy food or work? We are essentially doing that in real-time; a single crash can kill you. That’s why there are so many billboards promoting crash laywers in Florida and Alabama.

Hurra! This is my first post on my new website after me spending a whole day to test and write (copy) codes. If you can see this, that means this really pays off. I think I am going to talk briefly about how to set up a reliable personal website and some difficulties I encountered when I was doing this.
A web map to track COVID-19 data with d3.js. Many dashboards are still using web-Mercator for global map and choropleth for absolute values; this is wrong so we thought we cartographers should stand up! With Yue Lin, Armita Kar, and Ningchuan Xiao.
An integrated web-map gallery for heterogeneous geographic information in Columbus, Ohio. Supported by Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA), OSU.

Delay is a primary indicator of transit and we used GTFS to measure that. It changed, a lot.

Hate transfer? This paper introduced a systematic method to measure the risk of missing transfers with GTFS real-time data; in other words, how bad you should hate transfers.

Revisiting the benefit of RTI on the wait time of different users and the answer is surprising. No, RTI does not always help people.

COVID quarantine is bad, but having to transit during COVID is worse. We used smartphone data to measure the dynamics and dimensions of COVID-19 related transit demand decline from Feb to May 2020.

Accessibility is unrealiable. How to build a realizable and human-centric accessibility measure for transit users that cannot outrun buses and predict the future?

Scooters can help you travel better in a public transit system; Well, if you are in the right place… and you have money… and you do not bring too many friends with you…

Public transit is criminally unfair for people with mobility disability.

Football games can disrupt public transit; not just near the stadium, but everywhere all at once.

Teaching, Ohio State University, Department of Geography, 2021
This course introduces principles of geographic information systems (GIS) and their applications in spatial analysis and information management. The course is designed to give students an understanding of cutting-edge geospatial technologies, their capabilities, uses, and limitations. Representative applications for each discipline area are demonstrated in the computer laboratory portion. (placeholder, will update later)
Workshop, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, 2021
The ability to visualize large amounts of information in real time on interactive maps has never been more important for GI scientists and specialists. Web-based and open-source platforms, such as the mapping library leaflet and the noSQL database MongoDB, are becoming more popular and useful for their real-time functionality. This workshop will serve as an introductory technical training on full-stack geo-visualization. The workshop will include an overview of web-based platforms, mapping libraries, and the backend infrastructure. During this interactive and hands-on session, all participants will have a chance to build a small web map project with a provided data pack. The whole process of programming and debugging will be demonstrated. There will be time for both development and answering questions that participants may have.
